Born in Akaroa, Banks Penisula, the son of artist Joseph Welch, Nugent Welch was a self taught painter. He became a professional artist in 1909, after leaving his job at the Wellington Harbour Board.

The official war artist for the NZ Expeditionary force in WWI, he also became a well known plein air painter of Wellington landscapes, with particular attention to atmospheric weather affects.
