Pierre Jean François TURPIN (1775–1840)
The French medical reference book Flore Medicale, 1814-1818 by Pierre Jean François Turpin was published in six volumes and with 360 plates. This major work portrayed a variety of flowers, trees, vegetables, spices and herbs which could be used for treating illnesses. Each print is accompanied by the descriptive french text that was referenced by the physsician in applying the plant for treatment, with the names of the plants in many languages, including English & Latin.
The prints were stipple-engraved after drawings by PJF Turpin, one of the greatest botanical painters of his time, and then hand coloured in the Redoubte style. Some illustrations were made by Anne Panckoucke.
