The Reverend W. Houghton, author of British Fresh Water Fishes (1879), was a Fellow of the Linnaean Society of London, a scientific society for the study of biology founded in 1788. He was a serious nturalist who studied the specimens in the collection of the British Museum for this work. He also authored an earlier work, Sea-side Walks of a Naturalist.
