A series of eight chromolithographic subjects illustrative of Maori life from drawings by Benoni White. There are a further three cards which may have been the start of another series. William Potts was the lithographer for these early cards
The Maori Art cards were produced c1900 by A.D. Willis, a Wanganui printing firm run by printer Archibald Duddington Willis. Willis set up the Wanganui herald newspaper with politician John Ballance, a future premier of New Zealand. He later began bookbinding, publishing, and commercial printing, and published several series of Christmas and greetings cards featuring local elements and iconography.
Willis was a pioneer of the use of chromolithography in New Zealand and the most significant publisher of postcards, producing cards of quite extraordinary beauty and style to match the best anywhere in the world at that time. When he died in 1908 the business seems to have died with him.
